Family gets heartbreaking as father and son who died in house fire were laid to rest

A father and his young son, who were both fatally injured in a horrific house fire, have said an emotional farewell to their devastated family.

Barry and Ethan Mason’s lives were cut short on Sunday, April 14, after the fire at their home on Warrington Road in Wigan. Barry Mason, aged 45 and believed to be from Skelmersdale, tragically died after heroically running back into the inferno to save his son.

Four-year-old Ethan succumbed to his injuries in hospital two days later, after suffering burns to 70% of his body. Their funeral took place on Thursday, May 23, which happened to be National Ethan Day.

In response to the ECHO’s Facebook post about National Ethan Day, Ethan’s Aunt Jessica commented, “Oh, he’s definitely here with us.” In another heartfelt message, she wrote: “Today will be the hardest day of our lives.

“Today we say goodbye to our little rainbow bubble Ethan and our hero Barry. Today we will do our utmost to stay strong for your mom and your precious brothers and sister.

“We’ll hold them tight for both of you. See you on the other side, my beloved.”
