From coquettecore and secretarycore to the coastal cowgirl aesthetic, there isn’t a fashion lover in the world who can deny that 2024 has been ripe for trending aesthetics.

Now, six months out of the year, a new cultured style is emerging and it’s already being worn by the likes of Sabrina Carpenter, Emma Chamberlain and almost every “cool girl” in the know.

Meet Tomboy Femme, TikTok’s latest fashion obsession.

What is Tomboy Femme?

Think cute, quirky, girly but with a tomboy edge.

Personally, as a sister of two older brothers, Tomboy Femme was and is my favorite aesthetic. Growing up in a household of Nerf gun enthusiasts, PlayStation stans, and Action Man addicts, I, like many others who were called upon by their rowdy siblings to play the role of a wounded soldier in need of rescue under a pile of sofa cushions, exposed to the Tomboy Femme aesthetic long ago. Mainly due to the fact that I had to be the star of the aforementioned military operation that went wrong at 4pm and had ballet class at 5pm. Think of pink tights and a tutu combined with green face paint and a camouflage jacket and you’re in the right place.

In short, Tomboy Femme ends up dressing like you’ve combined your own girly wardrobe full of bows and ruffles with your brother’s hand-me-down cargo shorts, football jerseys and old baseball caps.

According to Megan Watkins, lead stylist at SilkFred, the Tomboy Femme phase is all about “merging masculine and feminine to create an interesting and unique silhouette that’s perfect for summer office wear and casual events. It’s the perfect balance between cute, delicate and relaxed. She’s the girl who can do both!”

How do you ensure the Tomboy Femme aesthetic in 2024?

Like most trends, the Tomboy Femme aesthetic is all about curated, mismatched style choices. Megan explains that the trend is “really great for everyday wear, and especially for office wear, as it uses masculine workwear such as blazers, skirts and tailored trousers. For example, be inspired by Christian Dior’s SS 24 catwalk and combine a delicate midi skirt in lace, linen or silk, combine it with a boxy blazer, shirt and complete this look with super girlish ballerinas.’

If you’re not sure where to start, Megan suggests opting for a “ruffled or balloon sleeve top and pairing it with boyfriend jeans and chunky sneakers. You can also complete this look with a satin or gingham headband.” Or, for something a little more casual, look no further than the trend that took over Copenhagen Fashion Week earlier this year: skousers. Skirts over pants are set to become even more popular this year and truly embody the ‘tomboy femme aesthetic’. Casual yet cool: a pastel skirt and neutral trousers are a great combination and look great during the day with a minimalist cami and in the evening with an oversized blazer over the shoulders.”

Megan’s key components for nailing the style and looking effortlessly cool are as follows:

  • Oversized blazer
  • Oversized shirt
  • Mini skirt
  • Midi skirt
  • Slip dress
