The Business of Intelligence from Reagan to Biden


Linda Weissgold, former deputy director for analysis at the CIA, will join host Michael Ard in a curated conversation on “The Business of Intelligence from Reagan to Biden” for the MS in Intelligence Analysis Program.

Weissgold served as the CIA’s deputy director of analysis from March 2020 to April 2023. In that role, she was responsible for the quality of intelligence analysis from all sources at the CIA and for the professional development of the officers who produce it. During her 37-year career at the CIA, Weissgold was part of creating and delivering intelligence analysis on a variety of complex issues and in multiple environments.

Before the September 11 terrorist attacks, she was an analyst and leader of analytical programs focused on the Middle East. Immediately afterwards, she was among those who volunteered for counter-terrorism assignments. The units she led, including as head of the CIA’s Office of Terrorism Analysis, generated insights that inspired U.S. policy and operations across multiple administrations and helped identify the location of Osama Bin Laden and the rise of the Islamic State group (often called ISIS). ). For more than two years, she served as President George W. Bush’s intelligence briefer.

Weissgold is a skilled communicator with experience addressing urgent and controversial issues and a proven teacher and advocate of analytical craftsmanship, integrity and objectivity in intelligence analysis. She is widely recognized for her unwavering dedication to the CIA’s national security mission and its officials.
