Judge Alito rejects demands that he recuse himself from the January 6 cases

WASHINGTON — Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito rejected calls to recuse himself from cases related to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, telling members of Congress on Wednesday that such calls are politically motivated.

Alito said the flags flying over his homes, which experts say are linked to false claims that the 2020 election was stolen, were flown by his wife and were not in support of the Stop the Steal movement.

“A reasonable person not motivated by political or ideological considerations or a desire to influence the outcome of cases before the Supreme Court would conclude that this event does not meet the applicable standard for denial,” Alito wrote in a letter to lawmakers. “I am therefore obliged to reject your request for disqualification.”

The Supreme Court is ruling on two cases related to efforts by former President Donald Trump and his supporters to overturn the outcome of the election, decisions that will impact Trump’s criminal election interference charge.
